Foundation students build race track for end-of-semester show - Posted to KCAI Community Blog by Ltobin

While foundation students don't sell any work in the end-of-semester show, they do create some very entertaining art. This year, Russell Ferguson had his students build a race track constructed out of scrap lumber and packing tape. The scrap lumber was intricately wedged and woven together and erected using tension and friction as a study of the complexities of engineering and as a lesson in working in groups. Earlier in the semester, students built wooden tool boxes which they planned to place on carriages and race along the track. Each “car” was supposed to contain five eggs, which the students had to pack so they wouldn't break during the course of the race, which included a jump at the end of the track. I don't know how successful the racing was or how many eggs were broken. But Russell did promise complimentary fried eggs to his students and visitors, so.. (Read More)

DONE! - Posted to Da Gilly by Gillian

i'm done i'm done i'm done i'm done! It feels pretty good, and I think I did pretty well also.  I got to have a couple beers this afternoon with my favorite teacher of all time, Dr. Milton Katz.  He bought a couple of students from our literature of the Holocaust class some beers this afternoon at the Westport Flea Market.  Needless to say, it was quite a pleasant time.  Now I plan to do a bit of celebrating and a whole lot of relaxing.  Happy Holidays! .. December Holidays in Japan - Posted to Learning Japanese by Sensei

Holiday decorations have sprung up in Kansas City, and so too in Japan.    But first....there is only one official holiday in Japan this month - December 23 - Tenno no Tanjobi... The Emperor's Birthday.   This is always a national holiday.  When the emperor changes, the holiday will, too.  The current Emperor of Japan is Akihito, whom the Japanese refer to as Tenno Heika.  There is a small ceremony at the Imperial Palace that is open to the public, but not much more. Otanjobi omedeto!  Happy Birthday! Although Christmas is not a holiday in Japan, it is celebrated by more people each year.  To be honest though, it is more akin to our Valentine's Day.  Rather than candy canes and sugar cookies, the Japanese enjoy eating "Christmas Cake" and giving small presents to loved ones. Bear Sighting on KCAI Campus - Posted to KCAI Alumni Blog by Aadams

Lock up your daughters and hide your pic-a-nic baskets! Advancement's own Joe Fuller `11 is bear-suited up and causing mischief on campus.  Alumni, if you don't have enough excitement in your lives, you should visit us more often to see our fascinating wildlife (not just rabid squirrels anymore!). Okay, okay: I'm pulling your leg.  Joe isn't really doing anything untoward.  In fact, he is making art just like we're encouraging him to.  Check out the blurb Joe wrote below, in reference to his performance on Nov. 14: (Read More)

The KCAI printmaking department welcomed Drive-By Press to campus Nov. 5. Drive-By-Press, a mobile printmaking studio, talked about their experiences in a lecture in the Dodge Painting Building. The lecture was followed by an on-site printing demonstration by Joseph Velasquez and Katy Seals in the parking lot of Vanderslice Hall. Drive-By Press and KCAI students collaborated to print t-shirts with designs by Drive-By Press as well as student designs. In the last two years, Drive-By Press has visited well over 100 Universities, Colleges and public schools, traveling over 100,000 miles to spread the contemporary relief printmaking canon and good cheer! Print Exchange and Tomorrow (Nov 11th) meeting: - Posted to KCAI Print Club by Abby

The president of Red Circle Press in Idaho has contacted myself and our fearless leader Joe about possibly participating in a print exchange. Everyone would make an edition print set and send them enough prints for everyone, then you would receive one of everyone else's submitted prints. If you are interested, you MUST contact me and let me know. I'll only send further details out to people that contact me. Get it? Got it? Good. Don't forget- Our meeting tomorrow night is still a go. Be thinking about what images you want to use for the "mini" prints we're going to sell on Etsy and on the first friday of December at the incubator press. If you already have images you want to donate for the benefit of gaining a profit for PC, bring them as well so I can get them listed on our etsy store. .. (Read More)
